Engagements are won by being the fastest to do so, meaning that practice is key. Because of this fact, most engagements in CS will begin with both parties stopping in their tracks using a technique called 'counter-strafing.' The premise is simple, if you're moving in one direction, tap the other direction to come to a rapid and complete stop, then centre your reticle, then fire. Spray pattern is directly effected by movement, and unless you're crouching while you're moving, bullets are going to come out of your gun sideways if you even think about walking a little while the trigger is down. There is one crutch to this method, however, and it's our next point.īeing someone who is really big on movement shooters (see my Titanfall II review) imagine how shocked I was to learn that, in CS, shooting and moving at the same time means you will hit nothing and you will die. Players like me, however, rely on something else the first bullet out of the AK will always hit the centre of your reticle, and a headshot from the AK is an instant kill.

eSports players have this talent down to a degree where its borderline robotic. The AK's recoil pattern is a crude 'r' shape, up and to the right, so the player can drag their mouse down and to the left as the mag depletes to counteract the spray pattern and make every bullet hit roughly the same area. The most famous and well known example of this is the AK-47, or as it is colloquially known the best gun in the game. In other words, every gun can fire as straight as a laser beam if you spend enough time learning it. In the world of CS, every single firearm will recoil in a consistent, predictable pattern that can be directly countered by mouse input. No shouldering, no aiming down the sights, just holding it in both hands and pulling the trigger bullets would go everywhere with no discernible pattern, and you'd likely miss what you wanted to shoot. Imagine, if you will, hip firing an automatic rifle. If I talk about all the ways in which the mechanics are unique, this love letter will rival the Dune Trilogy in length, so I'll drop just a few examples here before moving on. If you've played other shooters before, and none of them are Counter Strike, then the way this game feels is going to be totally alien to you, and if you've played Counter Strike as well as other games then you know what I'm talking about. Young me hated that idea he just wanted to shoot terrorists, but as I am now I'm captivated by the way CS's tried-and-true play system holds its own amidst an entirely oversaturated market. Every usual shooter trope is turned on its head, and old habits have to be forgotten, you have to practice something entirely new, and once its engrained into your head, it sticks around forever just like learning to ride a bicycle. What do I mean by that? I mean every single part of this game has to be learned if you want to play with any degree of skill.

Counter Strike is, in every sense of the word, a bicycle. What younger me didn't realise at the time, and it sounds obvious to me now, but back then I was thick as pig-shit so cut me some slack, is that not all shooters feel or look like Call of Duty, and none fit that description better than CS:GO. I didn't understand how the game worked, and my Modern Warfare 2-addled mind at the time had no intention of learning a new system, so I just stubbornly tried to play it like a Call of Duty player until I had grown so much hatred for it that I dropped it for YEARS. Granted, I was much younger then I got it when it first came out so I must have been either 15 or 16, can't be bothered to do the math. I vehemently hated CS:GO when I first played it. Let's start this 'love letter' with something a little unorthodox. So, why CS:GO anyway? There's a lot to unwrap, so let's just dive right in to the love letter. I missed these message boards truth be told, and now I'm back, writing about a game I never once hinted I would write about.

A lot has happened to me over these past couple of months, as I'm sure a lot has happened to all of you. So, as you all can probably tell, my promise of this becoming a regular thing was greatly exaggerated. "In the coming weeks, then, you can expect love letters to The Last of Us, FFXV, and Death Stranding."
